The Bible reveals to us, “The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them” (Psalm 34:7). Who is this “angel of the LORD”? Throughout the Old Testament, this Being is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, before He became human. Jesus is not a created being or an angel, but He is the commander of the angels. He is the LORD, as seen earlier, Yahweh. He is the LORD of the angels, the LORD of the messengers. And at certain very important times, He is the Messenger Himself, as the Messenger of the LORD, or the Angel of the LORD. And since Christ is and always has been God (John 1:1), when He came from heaven and appeared to humans, at times He takes on an angelic or human form so as not to consume those He appears to, for sin and sinners cannot exist in the holy presence of God (Isaiah 33:14; 59:2).
Earlier, when confirming Christ’s divinity, Exodus 3 was studied to affirm that Christ is Yahweh. Upon closer investigation, one finds that Yahweh is also identified as the angel of the LORD. The Bible reads, “And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed” (Exodus 3:2). Note where the angel or Messenger of the LORD finds Himself. Where? In the midst of a bush that is burning but not consumed. Now read carefully where the LORD, who is God in this passage, finds Himself, “And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I” (Exodus 3:4). However, it’s essential to note that at His incarnation, He fully became human (John 1:14). He didn’t merely put on human flesh as a covering; He completely assumed humanity, becoming a human being, while retaining His divinity (Romans 8:3; Philippians 2:5-8).
This profound truth, that the Creator became creature, surpasses human comprehension. Scripture refers to it as “the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh” (1 Timothy 3:16). God was born—unfathomable, incredible! All of this was done with the purpose of saving us by taking on our death. In Study 3, on pages 12-14, it was learned that Jesus had to die in order to save us because God’s law is eternal, unchanging, and demands the death of the transgressor. This is rooted in God’s Justice and Mercy, which had to meet in Christ on the Cross. This could only be possible if Christ is fully God and Himself the source of Divine Justice and Mercy, allowing it to converge in Him.
In heaven, during Lucifer’s rebellion and his accusations against God, he presented a challenge similar to that of Daniel’s colleagues—he questioned God’s law. He accused God unable to claim in being both just and merciful by having a law that demanded perfect obedience. He argued that if God were entirely just and upheld His holy law, then He could not be merciful, as the law required punishment for its transgressors. Or, according to Lucifer’s argument, God had to be entirely merciful and offer freedom within His law that were less restrictive. In this case, He could not be entirely just and expect perfect obedience to His law. With this line of reasoning, Lucifer attempted to dismiss God’s law as unfair, labeling God as a selfish tyrant.

God had to give Lucifer the opportunity to prove his charges, and God Himself was determined to prove them false. This cosmic conflict and courtroom drama would unfold on planet Earth, with human beings at the center of this cosmic war. So when mankind sinned, Satan rejoiced, for he believed he could now prove his point. However, simultaneously, due to God’s love and His desire to save humanity, this presented an opportunity for God to reveal His true character.

God is entirely just which demands perfect justice—giving each what they deserve. Similarly, God is entirely merciful which calls for perfect mercy—refraining from giving what is deserved.
Justice acts as an irresistible force, while mercy stands as an immovable rock. One cannot be stopped, and the other will not yield. This apparent inconsistency within God’s character was exploited by Lucifer to discredit Him. However, there was a depth to God’s character that eluded Lucifer because he did not trust in God’s goodness.

So, when humanity sinned, Satan believed he had God in a checkmate position. Either God could enforce His justice and administer punishment for the transgressed law, leading to the eradication of all humanity, as all have sinned. Alternatively, God could demonstrate His mercy and abolish His law, thereby rendering no one guilty. But God, being God, would exercise both His justice and mercy. Christ, the living God, had to experience both God’s justice and mercy simultaneously in Himself and thus receive humanity’s punishment.

God would not destroy sinners because of His immovable mercy, and He would not abolish His law because of His irresistible justice. Instead, He chose to exercise both mercy and justice at the cost of Himself - He would take their punishment. While justice is an irresistible force that cannot be stopped, and mercy an immovable rock that will not yield, when they met with full force in Jesus Christ on the cross, it took away His life to give it to sinners. This revealed something in God’s character that Satan never knew existed: grace. While justice is receiving what you deserve, and mercy is not receiving what you deserve; grace is receiving what you don’t deserve. Grace. Amazing grace. This full-force meeting of justice and mercy in Christ culminated in a beautiful kiss (Psalm 85:10) between these two, displaying the depth of God: grace.

If there is someone besides Jesus in all of Scripture who was “perfect,” it is Daniel.
